Elation as Courtown Golf Club ladies win All-Ireland Minor foursomes

Must read

Throughout the summer managers Jackie Hamilton and Ann Bernie put together an extremely strong team comprising Mary O’Connor and Elaine Fitzgerald, Kate Sheehan and Ann O’Shaughnessy, Gay Gahan and Tina Smith/Oonagh Grehan, Mary Cooper and Mags Dooley, Eileen Moriarty and Angie Dooley.

On the way to glory they played Borris, Castlecomer, Portarlington and Waterford, with two teams playing at home in Courtown and two away.

Courtown then played Cill Dara in the regional finals to bring home the pennant to the club. It was a fabulous day playing at a neutral venue in Castlewarden.

The Courtown ladies travelled together as a team, wearing their new green team tee-shirts. It was a fabulous experience and really helped the team bond together.

Unbelievably, they were on to All-Ireland matches which were all held in Shannon Golf Club over two weekends.

The quarter-final was a tough one against Dun Laoghaire on a sweltering hot day, seeing temperatures of 25 degrees on the course.

Victory went to Courtown, only to discover their next opponent was Shannon, playing with home advantage.

Undeterred, they put their best foot forward in the semi-final with a determination to survive to play in the decider.

After getting through to the final against Howth on the last day, spirits were high and the team brought home a decisive win to bring the prestigious Minor Cup home.

Jackie Hamilton said it’s been a great privilege and exciting experience to manage the team along with Ann Bernie. “Ann’s experience and knowledge of inter-club tournaments has been a great help throughout,” she added.

“We’ve had great support throughout from Courtown Golf Club and a loyal band of supporters at our back.

“The work done by our live scoring reporters, Catherine Ledwidge and Catherine Quinn, allowed the larger audience of supporters at home to join in the excitement of the matches and is much appreciated.

“Our thanks to all who have encouraged and supported us this summer – it’s been amazing.”
