And his side didn’t let down as the wowed fans with an attacking style of play that created numerous chances in a very eventful first-half at Aviva Stadium.

Ireland should have taken the lead in the early moments of the game after Chiedozie Ogbene broke away on the left with Seamus Coleman free in the middle of the box.

Evan Ferguson brilliantly battled off Wout Faes as Ogbene got slipped through.

The Luton winger should have gone across the keeper but went for the near post and hit the side netting.

Ireland were awarded a penalty on 28 minutes after a handball in the box but the spot kick was saved as Brighton ace Evan Ferguson seemed to slip as the Sels saved easily.

Right on the stroke of the interval debutant Sammie Szmodics also had a chance after Evan Ferguson flicked on a header from a longball, but the Blackburn Rovers ace couldn’t find the net from five yards as he blasted it over the bar.

But fans were excited by John O’Shea’s first 45 minutes as interim gaffer as they hailed the style of play on social media.

One said: “Didn’t expect this team from John O’Shea in his first game as Ireland manager, but we must say it’s a team we’ve all dreamed of. #COYBIG

Another posted: “That first half will have people giving John O’Shea the job and I am not against it. Team looks cohesive, organised and actually playing some ball. Better team in the first half for me.”

A third wrote: “After this first 5 minutes give the Ireland job to John O’Shea.”

While one penned: “Best football we’ve seen from Republic of Ireland in years, no debate #IRLBEL
