IND vs AUS: “Cant’ Have Family Commitments”- Sunil Gavaskar’s Slams Rohit Sharma For Missing Game Ahead Of World Cup After ODI Series Loss

Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar has some harsh words for Indian skipper Rohit Sharma who failed to win the ODI series against Australia. India under his leadership lost the final ODI in Chennai by 21 runs.

Rohit Sharma missed the first ODI due to the marriage of his brother-in-law. Hardik Pandya led the side in his absence as India won the first ODI by wickets. He led India in the next two games but could not contribute much with the bat in the two must-win games. He scored just 13 off 15 balls in the second ODI where India were bowled out for just 117. In the third ODI, when India needed him to score big, Rohit was out for 30 off 17 balls after getting a good start.

After the loss, Sunil Gavaskar criticized the Indian skipper for not playing games for India consistently. The Indian skipper had missed matches previously due to injury and once again missed a match for personal reasons and family commitments. Gavaskar said that as a skipper Rohit needs to play every game.

“I think he needs to play every game. You can’t have a captain who is there for one match and not there for the rest. It is so important. It can happen to any other player but I think I know it was a family commitment, so he had to be there. That’s understandable,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

The former Indian skipper further said that Rohit Sharma Rohit cannot have family commitments during the ODI World Cup as he is the skipper of the side. He also highlighted the point of continuity in leadership as well.

“When it comes to the World Cup, you can’t have a family commitment; it’s as simple as that. Maybe before that, finish everything that you have unless it’s an emergency. Emergency is something completely different,” he stated.

“You need continuity in leadership. There’s a feeling that you have got everybody with you, otherwise there are two leaders. Then there are two leaders that the team is looking at,” Gavaskar further added.

Rohit helped India win the Test series against the Aussies 2-1, but couldn’t save them from a 1-2 defeat in the ODI series. India started the series with a five-wicket win in Mumbai but slumped to a 10-wicket defeat in Vizag. They lost the decider in Chennai by 21 runs to concede the series 2-1. This was India’s first ODI series loss since 2019 which was incidentally also against India.
