The former top man in Dublin GAA will act as chairman.

A new group has been set up to improve safety in Ballymun.

Called the Ballymun Implementation Board, it will focus on tackling community safety issues.

It brings together social services providers, business leaders, reps from schools and gardaí to engage with people in the area.

Former Dublin GAA Secretary and CEO, John Costello, will act as independent chairperson.

Justice Minister, Helen McEntee, says Ballymun is a brilliant community and huge progress has been made in addressing challenges in recent times.

“The creation of this new implementation group is a practical recognition by Government of the issues still faced by Ballymun and a commitment to bring stakeholders together to look at what actions are now needed,” she said.

“When it comes to improving safety, different communities need different solutions.

“We want to empower the people on the ground to have a real say on what actions can be taken to help them feel safer.

“That is the entire premise of my approach to community safety.”

She hopes this group will give locals a real say on what actions can be taken to help them feel safer.
