Alex Currid travelled to Malta to compete for a Republic of Ireland select team that took home the five-team hotly-contested ICC International Cup.

In the round robin competition, the Wexford man won all his matches 2-1. This enabled him to win best Under-21 player in the series.

The Irish results were as follows: Ireland 13, Malta 14; Ireland 23, France 4; Ireland 19, Northern Ireland 8; Ireland 22, Scotland 5; highest break: Philip Browne (Ireland), 91.

Last weekend, Currid captained a Liam Mellows team also featuring Shane Bates, Steven O’Reilly, Andy Moore and Rodney Goggins to the final of the Leinster team championship held in Celbridge Snooker Club, Co. Kildare. A total of 13 teams competed.

The young Wexford cue man didn’t lose a frame during the competition, undoubtedly the star of the show. Captaincy for the second year hasn’t put him under one ounce of pressure.

For the fifth consecutive year, Kilkenny Shed played Liam Mellows in the final, with the Wexford club losing on a 3-1 scoreline.

Liam Mellows’ results were: beat Celbridge ‘B’ 3-0; beat Newbridge 3-2; beat Hillside (Kildare) 3-1; beat Cavan CYMS 3-2; lost to Kilkenny Shed 3-1.

This has qualified Liam Mellows to the 33-year-old 16-strong All-Ireland team championships, held annually in Gleneagles Hotel, Killarney, Co. Kerry.
