Douglas’ Jack Murphy underlined his status as a player to watch when he cruised to a four-stroke win in the Boyle Sports Lee Valley Scratch Cup.

Murphy (pictured above by Niall O’Shea) opened with a 69 to share the first round lead with club mate James Walsh before following it with another 69 to lead by four shots from Walsh and Castletroy’s Andrew McCormack after 36 holes.

He then closed with a two-over 74 to win by four shots on four-under 212 from Kevin LeBlanc and McCormack with Fota Island’s David Howard and Dundalk’s Caolan Rafferty a shot further back.

Murphy’s talent has been spotted further afield and he will head for the University of Washington in August.

It was also a good day for Hermitage’s Kate Lanigan, who finished tied for second in the Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Open Championship at Royal Troon, two strokes behind England’s Ellie Monk on four-over.

Lanigan was three clear with nine holes to play but bogeyed the 11th and triple bogeyed the 17th to close with a three-over 75.

Elsewhere, Lahinch’s Aideen Walsh claimed a five-shot win in the 54-hole Carlow Ladies Senior Scratch Cup.

She led by a shot overnight before closing with a three-under round to win on 220 from County Louth’s Ellen O’Shaughnessy.
